Apologies for the long slumber… Was a bit busy with the shit load of bugs that keep popping up before the release at the beach house and was going nuts with trying to memorize all that EJB stuff for the J2EE exam…

It would have been a sin not to post a blog about the lovie dovie month of February. Even though we have come to the end of the month thought of penning down some words about it from a male perspective. Considering the fact that the Valentines Day is a great opportunity to dissect the incongruous human behavior when it comes to that sweet four letter word called LOVE.

For the mediocre male homo sapien the 14^th day of February would be just another day… Yet for those Casanovas hell bent on impressing upon their lady friends their true and undying LOVE, it is another story.

Rather than criticizing the pandemic behavior which takes place during this day, I’d like to explore what might attribute to such behavior especially in a country like SL.

So what does make us lose all reason when it comes to LOVE? I have seen some discussions on the tube recently about some pundits trying to connect this word to sexual desire and trying to paint the young as a hallucinated generation of drug addicts and sex workers. WTF?

I might not agree on how some people celebrate Valentines Day or maybe even the fact the need to dedicate a special day to do that. Yet trying to define an emotion by the acts of a few should be condemned. It is these kinds of twisted interpretation that lead to what everyone terms as the cultural divide.

My view on the matter is somewhat undefined. After all the observations and conversations I’ve had with my friends and by my own experiences, I find it difficult and uncomfortable to find a reason to why we behave like total idiots to impress women we are in love with. Is it sheer stupidity?

Maybe the reasons are seen as primal in nature, yet it seems to be mixed with the cravings of the human to seek affection and companionship.

So in other words we all are fools when it comes to LOVE. Happy belated Valentines Day wishes… Calvin signing off……

Christmas is here again…
Although I’m a Buddhist and don’t really celebrate Christmas it’s pretty hard to ignore the Christmas spirit in the air …
May it be the long queues at shopping malls and dress boutiques or the never ending search for a parking space during any time of the day or the hyperactive DJs playing Christmas songs over and over again while claiming that their station has been declared the official Christmas Radio station by some unknown decree; one would have to be pretty ignorant not to notice this euphoria during the last month of the year.
Sadly I’m not as ignorant as I thought myself to be.
Don’t worry guys… this isn’t another post about the intolerable commercialization of another hallowed festival nor an analysis of how Saint Nicholas ended up wearing red pants cleaning chimneys.

Rather.. I’d like to reflect upon a tragic incident that occurred almost one year ago on December 26th which claimed many innocent lives and proved how minuscule and helpless we are to the wrath of nature.
Although so many words were told by many a scribe about this tragedy and so much of work has been done to bring normalcy to our brethren affected by the Boxing Day tsunami, that fateful day will remain in our minds and our hearts forever.

I’d like to finish off my post with a little poem that caught my eye recently while browsing through my mail box.

Greetings Fellow Earthlings.
Been a long time since I have last addressed thee..
Been busy reading another hit by Mario Puzo. Damn this guy knows how to write good mafia stories.
He is truly (in his own words) a great Mafiasco.
Although 'Omerta' wasnt as good as 'The last Don', it was still a great read.
It is truly amazing how Mario engulfs the reader in a sea of violence while bringing out the family values and honour of an Italian society.

Well off for today... Work awaits me..

Of Ethics and Virtue...

Recently looking at some comic stripes of Calvin and Hobbes, my mind wandered into the deep abyss of morality and virtues that govern our everyday lives. This only led to more why’s than answers..

By definition the word "Virtue" defines goodness.
Is this goodness genetically imprinted? Is it attained by our actions?
Does character and virtue lead to ethical behavior?
Is it that simple?

In today's world is it just to judge someone by their actions in order to determine if he or
she is a "GOOD" person? Is it politically correct?
Could we appoint a single virtuous entity who could point out what is tolerable and what is not? Is it religion? Is it the UN? I'd be damned if it was George W. Bush...

I discovered lately that ethics and moral judgments are easily evaluated when it concerns others. Do we filter out ethics according to our wants and needs..?

Seems as if the ideal world that we dream of living in is way far off than we imagine it to be...

In one of Calvin and Hobbes stripes, Calvin sums up his moral philosophy when he tells Hobbes, “Some people are pragmatists, taking things as they come and making the best of the choices available. Some people are idealists, standing for principle and refusing to compromise. And some people just act on any whim that enters their heads.” Hobbes rolls his eyes and says, “I wonder which you are.” Calvin responds: “I pragmatically turn my whims into principles!”

After reading the much acclaimed ' The Da Vinci Code ', I decided to go through the other books written by Dan Brown. (The latest being 'Angels and Demons')
And BELIEVE ME It was DAMN worth it!
I guess we all love conspiracies.. but the genius of Dan Brown novels lies in the mixture of facts and fiction dished out to the reader compelling him to make his own assumptions and conclusions.
Some of my enlightened friends think that Dan's work questions the whole idea of faith and religion and questions the authenticity of his intentions..

To all those Enlightened one's I ask WTF?

C'mon isn't civilizations built upon the human inclination to question what he is taught or made to believe? To question what is right and what is wrong?

Now dont go calling me an anti- religious hippie...
All I'm asking is why not question faith???
